Following up after an application: when, how often, and when to stop

A short follow-up after a week is normal. A third reminder is not. Timings, a template and the signals that mean you should stop.

Recruiters handle many open roles at once, and a polite follow-up can bring your application back to the top of the pile. Too many reminders have the opposite effect.

A sensible rhythm

  • Day 0: application sent.
  • Around day 5: check for any reply, including automatic acknowledgements and messages in spam.
  • Day 7: one short follow-up if there is no human reply.
  • Day 14: an optional final note, then stop.

Keep it short

Two or three sentences: the role, that you are still interested, and that you are available to talk. Reply in the same thread so the recruiter sees your original message.

When to stop immediately

  • Any human reply, positive or negative.
  • A rejection, even an automated one.
  • The posting has been closed.
  • The person asks not to be contacted.

How JobWise handles it

Follow-ups are scheduled from the moment your application is confirmed as sent, and every stop condition above cancels them automatically. By default each follow-up waits for your approval; you can change the timings in your agent settings.

Set up takes about ten minutes. Cancel at any time.
